Private security solutions in face of the impact of climate change

In recent weeks, videos have circulated on social media showing people receiving alerts from São Paulo’s Civil Defense on their cell phones about heavy rain, risks of flooding, landslides, and advising people to seek safe places.
The technology used by Civil Defense is effective in drawing attention—the alert “jumps” on the screen, covering any other application currently in use. The tool uses a geolocation system, sending the signal to devices near risk areas.
This Civil Defense measure also draws our attention to a new reality: we now have another factor to consider when discussing private security. Threats are now also natural, and we have a vast market in need of support. The time is for study and planning; it is the moment to strategically think about ways to extend the solutions we already have, such as asset protection, surveillance, and monitoring, to protection against environmental disasters.

Video Monitoring
Video monitoring, so common in the field of asset surveillance, was one of the first resources directed to assist with environmental issues. Video capture plus initial AI (Artificial Intelligence) analysis has been extremely important for the scientific community. The combination of these two tools is enabling the processing of large meteorological data. From this, trend forecasting is becoming increasingly accurate, promoting the safety of people and property.
With the help of these systems, people have more time to respond to extreme weather events like hurricanes and floods. Moreover, satellite images also allow for mapping deforestation, collecting pollution data, and identifying fire-risk areas. Monitoring oceans also becomes much more feasible with these new possibilities.

Unfortunately, these environmental disaster events are intensified by climate change and improper land use, causing not only environmental damage but also affecting urban infrastructure and putting lives at risk. They are becoming part of daily life, and reports of flooding and flash floods in places previously unaffected are increasingly common.
Thus, the list of situations for which private security can offer asset and personal protection solutions expands. Prevention and rapid response to natural disasters require the adoption of advanced technologies, such as real-time monitoring systems and integration with emergency teams. In this context, private security becomes a crucial ally in protecting property and people—both during incidents and in planning preventive measures—contributing to community resilience in the face of these new challenges.
